I got to meet and talk to Katie Isabelle at Horrorhound weekend in Indianapolis. Emily Perkins canceled, she got a part in a TV show. But then when I arrived home, I found a letter from her. She wrote me back for the fan letter I sent her in June! So, I made contact with both of them!
Details to follow in a few days. Too tired and busy now to say much more.

Katie Isabelle is about the kindest, most gregarious woman you will every meet, and she's very intelligent. I mean, she met one fan two years before, didn't see him in between, and called him by his first name. I guess I talked to her for a total of fifteen minutes in small intervals between autographs (I got three autographs from her.) She was happy to answer all of my questions. I asked her about American Mary and Ginger Snaps.
About Ginger Snaps, I knew it had been a grueling shoot and colds and flus kept knocking down the cast and crew. I asked her if she had been physically sick during any of the scenes. Her answer surprised me. She had been throwing up during some of the shoot. (I expected something respiratory.) I didn't follow up and ask her which scenes. I did ask her if there were any scenes she especially enjoyed shooting. She at first said any with Emily Perkins, which is to say, 95 percent of them. I asked her if, when she heard from a fan that they were shooting a sequel, if she was skeptical. She said she was surprised to see the scripts she got, especially for the prequel.
I asked her a few questions about American Mary, which told me that Mary was a bigger monster in the script than she turned out to be in the movie. I looked at the stern, dour face Mary had in the pictures on the desk and tried to compare it to the vivacious woman I saw in front of me, so I blurted out, "How did you take all the humanity off your face?" She answered without missing a beat, "Oh, I'm just cold and dead on the inside."
I finally ended by telling her how much Ginger Snaps meant to me. That I committed to becoming a writer because of it, and that I had written a 650 page fan fiction novel, when I hadn't written another fan fiction about anything else. She seemed impressed. But I'm thinking she impressed me far more.
(I am rewriting that novel, and it's looking a lot shorter on rewrite.)
Unfortunately, because Emily Perkins didn't make it, they canceled the Ginger Snaps panel, which is where I wanted to ask many in depth questions.
More about Emily next post.
