On Halloween, I watched "Evil Dead" and "The Fly," the original 1958 version. The latter is actually pretty important to this website. GS director John Fawcett was inspired by David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of "The Fly," where a man changes gradually into an insect after a scientific accident. Fawcett wanted to make a similar horror film, where the victim of a werewolf attack changes gradually. "Body horror," as its called.
I think, BTW, Fawcett's idea was better on several counts. Not everyone is a loner scientist working on a genius invention, but everyone goes through puberty. Just about everyone goes to high school, and everyone either falls into the category of being an outcast or working to avoid being an outcast.
This means that Ginger Snaps would have never been inspired if not for the 1958 version of "The Fly." However, the idea of a genetic change causing a gradual transformation was not even in cinema then. News of the discovery of DNA and its implications had not permeated popular culture yet. In this film, the scientist in question is trying to transfer matter, he tries it on himself, a fly is in the booth with him. It doesn't mess up his DNA, it puts a fly's head on him.
There's really not much to recommend this movie today, though. It has a better script and cast than most low budget movies of the time, but it's shot like a stage play. Many cinematographic techniques taken for granted today are not employed. The special effects are a bunch of flashing lights, and the makeup-- well, is a fly mask. It's good that they don't overuse it, our poor "fly" wears a hood through most of the movie. Although the writing is good for its time, the horror in the script is a matter of awful things happening to good people, so it spends a lot of time making us know these people are so good at a cost to a dimension or two on the character.
It's interesting if you like this sort of throw back, but I can't see many people liking it today.

I'm just beginning to catch up on movie watching. Saw "The Last Casino" and "Salt."
Last Casino was a good movie. I wouldn't call it great, but it was good. It didn't have any big themes, just a great story. Of course, it helps that Katharine Isabelle has second and Kris Lemche has third billing. Katie gets her best part since GS, and this a part far different than Ginger: a mathematical whiz with a hell of a visual memory being trained to beat the Casinos, and she's a bold, assertive character in this.
Only flaws: I thought the villain was a bit over-the-top. I mean, if anybody in real life dripped evil like he does, police would arrest him for feeding pigeons. He's played more like a supervillain. Also I didn't much care for the Requiem for a Dream undercrank shots that serve no purpose in this type of story, except to keep things from getting to quiet. They kind of kept a rhythm in Requiem, here they break the rhythm.
However, all and all, even if you don't like casino movies, you'll probably like this one, because it's about non-casino people being put in that world.
Now, Salt: Take any Angelina Jolie action movie, take the Bourne series, put'em together and you have this movie, or this series of movies, since sequels will be coming soon and its set up for them. I'm not really an Angelina Jolie fan (I know, then why watch this? I thought I might change my mind) but she and her stunt doubles do a good job with this. It does have a good twist in the middle, and otherwise, like The Bourne Identity, she and others like her (and like Bourne, there are others like her) are just super-characters. She does everything that Jason Bourne does with some McGyver thrown in.
A standard action film. Nothing that would stop your heart, though.

Saw 'The Tracey Fragments' last night. Freakin' awesome for an Ellen Page flick. Fucked up and crazy as usual. (Not as much as something like An American Crime and Hard Candy;where the chaos is all over the map, but the ending... damn)
Going to try to watch 'Hard Candy' tomorrow if I can.

I disliked the 4th sleepaway camp. But that ending was funny. ;D ANGELA!!!! I think they're doing a reunion one which should be out sometime this year or next year, according to the offical site. Unless they're dusting off "The Survivor". I'm not sure if "Berserk" will go anywhere, since its been a while since I've heard word of it. Long live SC!

Btw Bury The Hatchet, I didn't like Hard Candy. It has a good storyline but I found Ellen Page to be really annoying.

Tomorrow I'm seeing "Sucker Punch." This movie looks fantastic and the plot sounds mind-blowing. I'll let everyone know.
Haven't seen Red Riding Hood yet, but despite what critics have said, it is making a lot of money and shows no sign of waning, so word of mouth seems to be good on it.

Okay, Sucker Punch is a great movie with over-the-top-action, and if like anime, I think you have to love this movie. The main character, Baby Doll, does look like an Anime character. Not all the characters look that way, but the action is so much like Anime too.
About the action, they've become much better with that shaky cam. I wasn't once confused about the action or felt I couldn't see something important. The stop-action frames, well, I feel that's getting to be a visual cliche these days, but I'll take it as par for the course.
You might be lost unless I tell you it has the very same plot idea as "Pans Labyrinth," but adds a layered approach like "Inception." It starts out in the "real world,"1958. A young girl in dire straits escapes into not one, but two fantasy worlds, layered one on top of the other. The story is told symbolically, and only at the end do you find out what really happened vs. what you saw.
I have to say in the middle of it, I thought the story was lacking, but right when I was thinking that, the movie corrected itself. The final scene was good, that is, a great idea, but a little careless in execution. With just a slight rewrite they could of made it so much better. The acting is great with some lapses with minor characters (I don't know if it was the acting or casting) but all the principles are rock solid, and they do have moments of real drama.

Turns out, Sucker Punch seems to be a movie people either love or hate. And how do you like that? I just thought it was pretty good, a 6/10.
